Food in the 1600s
Food in the 1600s was a huge part of culture because it varied. The type of food a person ate depended mainly on what their social ranking was in society. One common food that was used in all classes was fish. Fish was used in several different dishes such as stew. People in the lower class with little amounts of money ate cheap and more the common items such as bread, onions, cheese, and porridge. The lower class did not have as much of a variety of beverages to consume as did the higher class.The higher ranked and wealthy individuals dinned usually on types of meat, bananas, different forms of wheat, and apples. As for beverages a higher ranked person would consume beer, wine, coffee, and most commonly tea. Romeo and Juliet would have been part of this class. These two people were ranked highly in society. Juliet was the daughter of Lady Capulet and considered royalty and Romeo was the son of Montague and also considered royalty. Having outside information of what the higher class ate during this time period gives the reader a fully detailed picture of what is going on in the play.
